The Latvian National Song and Dance Festival, also known as Vispārējie latviešu Dziesmu un Deju svētki, is a unique event that takes place in Latvia every five years since 1873. 1. A BIT OF HISTORY

The idea of the festival emerged in the 19th century, a time when Latvia was under foreign rule. The first festival, organized in 1873 by Jānis Cimze and Jāzeps Vītols, played a significant role in maintaining national unity and resistance to oppression.


THE FOUNDERS


Jānis Cimze (1814-1881) was a Latvian composer and conductor. He is considered the father of Latvian choral singing and played a crucial role in the establishment of the festival.


Jāzeps Vītols (1863-1948) was a Latvian composer and educator. He contributed to the popularization of Latvian folk music and was one of the organizers of the first festival.


CURRENT FESTIVAL NEWS


The last festival took place in 2023, marking the 150th anniversary of the event. The next edition is scheduled for 2028.
